Phil saw his shadow the other day so for now, it’s still winter. If you count 50 degrees in February as winter.  Anyway, on a mild winter day, there’s nothing better to make for breakfast than French Toast. Imagine my delight when I found an angel food cake loaf at Giant! This recipe for Angel Food Cake French Toast is a delicious combination of both and what better day to serve it than on Valentine’s Day?

I always buy myself a Valentine’s Day Gift and this year I subscribed to Marshmallow of the Month Club.  The subscription comes with small batch artisan marshmallows and hot chocolate mix. If you haven’t bought yourself or your partner a Valentine’s Day gift yet, check out the Marshmallow of the Month Club.

Now you could just use a dash of cinnamon in this recipe, but I highly encourage using Citrus Spiced Sugar from Calicutt’s for this recipe. Oranges, cinnamon, and sugar are hand mixed to create a sweet spice mix guaranteed to make you smile.

On to the details! Slice the angel food cake loaf in 12 even slices. I found that a serving size of three slices is just the right amount.

Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, sugar, and salt. The angel food cake absorbs the liquids very quickly and a lot of it, so don’t soak them too long. I found that about a minute on each side will yield a nice coating of the mixture.Bowl of eggs, milk, and spices whisked with the sliced loaf of angel food cake in the background and a pan with one slice french toast browned and the other not cooked yet

I first heated two of the tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat. Cook the angel food cake slices 2-3 minutes each side or until it’s a nice golden brown. Add more butter as needed.

Serve the Angel Food Cake French Toast warm with maple syrup. A side of fresh fruit would pair nicely.3 slices angel food cake french toast on a plate with a larger plate behind it and a jar of Calicutt's citrus spiced sugar

Got leftovers?

If you don’t have anyone to share your Angel Food French Toast with, freeze the leftovers and save them for another day.  Let the french toast cool, then place them in layers of wax paper.  Put them in a freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as you can.

When you’re ready to eat them again, heat them up in your toaster oven or in a pan on the stove.  I don’t recommend microwaving them since they will get mushy.

I hope you enjoy this recipe for Angel Food French Toast. Let me know what’s your favorite Valentine’s Day gift!

P.S. I can’t wait to buy the angel food cake loaf again during summer and top it with locally grown strawberries and whipped cream.
