Clean Eating Apple Crisp

The following recipe for apple crisp is clean, but the inclusion of oatmeal means that it is not paleo.  As one of my co-workers who loved the recipe said, “I didn’t realize this was clean eating.  I thought I was gaining 5 pounds.  It was so good!”

Update for 2021: I no longer follow “clean eating,” but you will still find many “clean” recipes on my blog.

Quite simply, clean eating is less restrictive than the paleo diet.  Paleo diets eliminate grains, beans, legumes, and dairy products which clean eating allows.  Both diets eliminate processed foods and added sugar.  Fruits, vegetables, meats, and healthy fats are stables of both lifestyles.  The paleo diet may be beneficial for those with health concerns as it completely eliminates dairy and grains.  I suffer from migraines, but am otherwise healthy, and there is no way I could ever eliminate an entire food group from my diet.  The key is moderation and choosing healthy alternatives.  If you suffer from migraines, an elimination diet may help you determine what triggers them and what you should avoid to prevent them.  I am not a medical professional, so please consult your doctor before changing your diet.

And some people say that clean eating does not taste good.  Serve them this recipe and prove them wrong.  It would go great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  I, unfortunately, was all out of ice cream when I made this.

I love that Strites’ Orchard has more apple varieties than you could possibly imagine.  There are sweet apples, tart apples, apples good for cooking with, and apples great for a snack all by themselves.  I recommend a nice baking apple like the Jonathan, Honeycrisp, or the classic Granny Smith for this recipe.
